The Room Below

Residence in Whitestone, NY

This project transforms a previously underutilized basement into a cohesive, multi-functional environment designed for leisure, wellness, and entertainment. The space is organized as a continuous sequence of interconnected zones—lounge, bar, media room, gym, and guest suite—unified through a clear spatial framework and consistent material language.

A central hall and lounge act as the organizing spine, from which individual areas branch out, allowing for both openness and privacy. Subtle architectural gestures—changes in ceiling treatment, material transitions, and integrated lighting—define each program without interrupting spatial continuity.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the experience. Slatted walnut surfaces, honed stone, and soft, layered lighting introduce warmth and depth, balancing the inherent enclosure of the basement condition. Glass partitions maintain visual connectivity while supporting acoustic separation.

The result is a refined, hospitality-inspired environment that elevates the lower level into an integral and adaptable part of the home.
