Sami Yposkafo Villas

Sami, Kefalonia, Greece

This project explores semi-underground (yposkafo) construction as a strategy for building within steep terrain. Each villa is partially embedded into the hillside, reducing visual impact while maximizing unobstructed sea views.

The development is organized as a series of stepped terraces, where roofs become extensions of the landscape. Living spaces open outward to private outdoor areas, while more private functions are positioned deeper within the section.

Stone retaining walls, planted roofs, and timber shading elements create a cohesive relationship between architecture and site. The limited material palette reinforces a sense of permanence and integration.

The result is an architecture defined by section and terrain—built into the landscape rather than placed upon it.
